WHERE CAN I SIGN UP FOR THIS KATHY???? I want to host a party!! I was just talking on another forum about hosting a girlie night. I was planning on doing a spa party anyway. Let me know the details, I'd love to do this.

Have you tested the sunscreen? I burned with baby sunscreen the last time I was out (now, granted, I was in the sun all day long) and I even reapplied. It was #50 too. So I'm wondering if all natural would be enough for me. I'm so darn fair! I used to be really tan but now I have a lovely apartment tan ;)

Hi Lindsay,

Our new Miessence organic sunscreen "Reflect" is great ~ yes, I've tried it. It contains the natural mineral, zinc oxide which blocks UV light completely. (The chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays, and you end up needing multiple chemicals to absorb all the different wavelengths of UV light).

I would love to come do an organic spa party for you and your friends! I have some beautiful invitations and will give you some samples to try out before the party! When would you like to host a MiSpa party ~ on a weeknight evening, or on the weekend?

I was thinking of doing it in 3 weeks on Friday evening.

I am excited to try this sunscreen! Maybe it will finally keep me from burning. And no chemicals! YAY!!!

Hi Lindsay,

We should connect on the phone to make scheduling easier! lol In three weeks, I'll be in Fort Bragg. But I could do an organic spa party on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening that same week (8/20 - 8/22). I could do it the following Friday, on 8/31, but that is the beginning of Labor Day weekend, so that may affect the turnout? Or, I could do it any Friday evening in September. Send me your phone number in a private email and I'll give you a call to get a spa party date scheduled.

I'm an herbalist & aromatherapist, too, so I like to bring along some fragrant lavender and rosemary to really pamper everyone!

Thanks so much!

Kathy-

I'd love to try it. I am so picky about sunscreens though. My girls and I are allergic to many (although I doubt I would be to this one) and I have issues with the consistency with some zinc sunscreens. What SPF's does it come in?

This sounds great to me, too. Is it water-resistant?

Hi Karen,

Yes, the new organic sunscreen IS water resistant! It is a water-free formula, also.

Kathy are you coming to the picnic? Could I get some from you there or should we order on your site?

I am planning on coming to the PP picnic. My dd has a party to go to the same day, a little earlier.

I'd be happy to bring you some organic sunscreen, or you can order it online, whichever you prefer. If you'd like to save on shipping, I'm happy to bring it for you.

Here's a link for the new Miessence organic sunscreen, "Reflect". If the link doesn't work, let me know. Otherwise, it's listed under "bodycare" on the website.

wow, that stuff is pricey... I was balking at the 20 plus I was paying for 8 oz of UV naturals. Is there an ingredients list somewhere so I can compare the two?

Lisa-

I tried Kathy's sunscreen last night & just wanted to tell you that it is a nicer sunscreen than UV Naturals. UV Naturals was WAY too greasy for me.

yeah UV naturals is quite greasy... but 'Kathy's" is twice the price of UV's, and 4 times the cost of regular sunscreen off the shelves.. blech, good stuff always has to cost more :) We'd go through $30-60 a month in sunscreen!

Maybe we could split one! LOL I do like the discount options, will have to think about this though! Hmmm... I will order online if/when more than likely. Thanks Kathy!

Lisa,

Here's the ingredient list for the "Reflect" Miessence organic sunscreen (I'm listing ingredients in the simple form without the botanical / Latin names):

Certified organic olive oil, zinc oxide, certified organic shea butter, certified organic beeswax, oat flour, polygonom multiflorum root extract (OK, the herbalist in me is coming out and I had to put the botanical name here - it's a Chinese herb also called He Shou Wu, or Fo-Ti), natural vitamin E, certified organic carnauba wax, essential oils, rosemary leaf extract, algae extract.

You are right, most of the really good sunscreen products coming out of Australia (Miessence and UV) and Europe (Dr. Haushka and others) are much more expensive than the mainstream, chemical suncscreens. The main reason for this is because chemicals are cheap! Companies looking to increase their bottom line will use cheap synthetic chemicals and preservatives like parabens to increase their profits.

Why would you want to use a natural sunscreen (any brand)? Besides the fact that most mainstream sunscreens have paraben preservatives in them, and parabens have been found in the breast tissue of women with breast cancer, many people have reported sensitivities to some of the chemicals in mainstream sunscreens. That's why PABA has been taken out of a lot of sunscreen formulas. The latest research has begun to discover some serious problems with the synthetic chemicals we've been putting on our bodies in the standard chemical sunscreens (any brand):

* Octyl-methoxycinnamate - produces free radicals know to be toxic to cells.

* Titanium dioxide - causes DNA damage due to superoxide radicals, active oxygen radicals and hydroxyl radicals when exposed to light.

* Oxybenzone - is rapidly oxidised in the presence of light and inactivates important antioxidant systems inthe skin (the skin's natural protection system).

* PABA - produces free radicals in the presence of light.

* Cinoxate - causes DNA damage.

Zinc oxide is the natural mineral used in many of the chemical-free, natural sunscreens (any brand, but including Miessence and UV). Zinc oxide has been used for over 300 years in a multitude of products (including diaper creams!) with no known adverse reactions. It protects against UVB and most of the UVA spectrum and is the closest thing to a total sunblock on the market today. No other sunscreen ingredient provides broader protection.

Can you still get a sunburn if you use sunscreens containing zinc oxide? Yes, you need to reapply every couple of hours if you are continually out in the sun that long.

Is getting a suntan bad for you? Many people worry about getting skin cancer (or wrinkles!) if they get too much sun exposure. It's fallen out of fashion to sunbathe, but in reality, we need at least 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure every day to prevent seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in the winter, and to get our daily dose of vitamin D! Once again, we're reminded.....everything in moderation.

One other comment about the costs of natural sunscreens ~ the Miessence "Reflect" sunscreen is not only natural and botanical, it's ORGANIC! That is one big difference between Miessence and other natural sunscreens like UV, Dr. Haushka and others. I would use any of those other natural brands, but my first choice is always organic.

Karen,

You mentioned you liked the discount options - did you already look at them on the website? I need to get my business info listed and will include that info. As with many direct sales companies, there are always people who join for the discounts (rather than for building a business). Nothing wrong with that!

Yes I clicked on "discount" in the little shopping cart section and read about it. It seems you can get a discount as a customer too, which is nice. I was looking at it as something I could use in my business, an incentive program. LOL Very nice!

Kathy it is getting to be that time of year again and I just was wondering if this sunscreen is recommended for babies?

organic mom

Hi Tina,

YES, Miessence organic sunscreen, "Reflect Outdoor Balm" is VERY SAFE for babies (and everyone else, lol)!

It has been tested and shown to provide sun protection to SPF 30. It is organic, with no synthetic chemicals, no parabens, etc. There has been some concern regarding nanoparticles in sunscreens - our sunscreen does not contain nanoparticles, and there is no titanium dioxide, another problem ingredient. Our ingredients are pure and natural (herbs, essential oils, minerals) AND ORGANIC! Tested only on happy humans.

Reflect Outdoor Balm works as a sun barrier, as opposed to chemical sunscreens which actually still absorb damaging rays from the sun on your skin. The sun barrier is zinc oxide, which has safely been used on babies for years and years - it is in baby creams & diaper ointments and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

Our Reflect Outdoor Balm has rosemary extract in it, which is also full of antioxidants and protective to the skin. I'm offering a 20% discount on all products containing rosemary in honor of Sue's Organic Spa Party today from 1-3pm. I'll have the organic sunscreen there for anyone who wants to try it! If you can't make it, and want to order some with the 20% discount, call me by Saturday. (See my posting on the Organic Spa Party for other specials).
